Red Ribbon Week

imageThis is me, Kylie, Calee, and Kynlie in our PJS on Friday. Monday we dressed in red. Tuesday we dressed like nerds. Wednesday we dressed up like superheros. Thursday we wore a crazy hat. And of course on Friday we wore our PJS. When we did this I had no idea how Red Ribbon Week was started, so I did some research and here is what I found out. Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnapping, torture, and brutal murder of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique “KiKi” Camarena in 1985. Agent Camarena had been working undercover in Guadalajara, Mexico for over 4 years. He found a tip one day that led to a discovery of a multi-million narcotic manufacturing operation in Chihuahua, Mexico. The successful eradication of this and other drug production operations angered leaders of several drug cartels who sought revenge. As a result, on February 7, 1985 they kidnapped  Agent Camarena and his pilot Caption Alfredo Zavala-Avelar (taken separately on the same day). When the DEA found out they launched a massive investigation. Soon, representatives of the Mexican Federal Judicial Police (MFJP) presented a tip to the DEA agents claiming Agent Camarena had been mistakenly kidnapped by a man and his 3 sons. The MFJD informed the agents that a raid of the man’s ranch in Angostura would take place the next morning and invited them to come. The MFJP raided the ranch before the DEA agent arrived. During the raid, they shot and killed 5 people. Not long after, a passerby found the bodies of both Agent Camarena and Captain Zavala were buried in one place and then moved to the ranch were they were found. The DEA found tapes that showed them being tortured and medical doctors keeping Agent Camarena alive so they could continue the interrogation. After all of this, they became a voice for prevention in order to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and illegal use of drugs in America. The following year the California State PTA adopted the RRC. Then in 1988, RRW was recognized nationally.
